IEC61850-Interface

IEC 61850 is a global communication standard for substation automation and power distribution systems. It differs from predecessor protocols such as IEC60870-5 and DNP3 by using and object-oriented data model rather than a signal-oriented approach. In addition, the data model is separated from the data transmission.

Features

This flexible and open system approach makes the application future-proof and independent of devices and their manufacturers. The system is designed from a series of standardized functions in the form of logical nodes, which are then provided by intelligent electronic devices (IEDs). It does not matter which IED contributes which nodes to the realization of the overall application.

The IEC61850 protocol was originally designed primarily for substation automation, but has now be extended to be used for grid-connected power generators from wind or hydro power as well as distributed energy resources (DER) such as combined cycle power plants or photovoltaic systems. Especially the application in the DER area shows the significance of the protocol for smart grid applications.

The IEC61850 interface for the series SINEAX AM/DM, CENTRAX CU and LINAX PQ is based on Edition 2 of the standard. The nodes provided by the devices allow a comprehensive analysis of the current system status, energy consumption and power quality.
Typically, data is transmitted in the form of data sets, e.g. when measurements are updated or have changed, to one or more recipients. Such data sets can be freely assembled by the user. This is done via the tool IEC61850 Configurator, which can be downloaded from this page.
