Reliable electricity billing for boat moorings at the marina

Task:

There is a high demand for extremely reliable meters for use in terminals at the quayside. The meters are used to bill the port’s customers (e.g. yachts, boats, ships, stores, etc.) and must therefore be MID-certified. This involves overcoming the challenges of sometimes very high temperatures and extremely salty air. In addition, the meters must be compatible so that they can be integrated into higher-level billing systems.

Solution:

The energy meter from the EnergyMID series is 100% suitable for all of the above requirements.

Benefit:

All billing-related issues are flawlessly fulfilled. In particular, the simplicity of the interface connection reduces complexity and ensures reliable and correct billing. In addition, the display of installation errors is highly appreciated by both the end customer and the installer in order to completely avoid incorrect calculations at a later date.

Stable and secure energy billing at airports

Task:

Airports generally form an extremely large infrastructure. The aim is not only to provide passengers with an efficient travel experience, but also to make their overall stay at the airport as pleasant and profitable as possible. Stores, internal services, etc. therefore form an essential basis for organizing the stay. The energy used by the individual consumers must be measured without disruption and in a stable manner, 24/7, so that it can then be billed cyclically according to MID.

Solution:

Airports rely on tested quality, especially when it comes to stability. EnergyMID series meters are often used at various European airports.

Benefit:

It has been shown time and again that meters can be influenced by harmonics, for example. It is not uncommon for strange values to be produced or for meters to fail completely, which usually cannot be explained. And since billing is involved here, this can be classified as sensitive. And this is where the EnergyMID series comes in. It is characterized by extremely good stability and immunity to external interference.

Speed step switch in locomotives with KIUNAX 2W2

Speed step switch in locomotives

Task:

The railcar driver of a locomotive has the task of transferring the “rolling stock” safely and punctually from one place to another. To do this, the railcar driver operates the so-called speed switch in an essential function. This switch is responsible for setting the speed as well as the brakes and also for the direction of travel. Due to the high requirements for the exact position detection of the on-load tap-changer (e.g. precision, accuracy, safety, reliability, perfect signal level, compact design, etc.), robustness with technical precision is indispensable.

Solution:

The KINAX® 2W2 was selected with a verifiable proof of concept. A contactless & wear-free capacitive scanning system is used. The angle of rotation measuring range is generally 0…350° and offers a measuring output of 0…1 to 0/4…20 mA. The zero point and span can be set and the characteristic curve of the output variable / linear or as a V-characteristic curve. Measuring ranges of 0…200° // Switching Point : 250° and 0…350° // Switching Point : 355° are pre-programmed ex works.

Benefit:

Due to the very compact design and the almost frictionless axis of rotation, position changes are detected quickly and very precisely. In addition, the simple yet very stable type of signal transmission allows fast and sustainable integration. During the very long service life of the encoder, maintenance work is virtually obsolete. In addition, the preset values are relevant so that no parameterization is required on site (= time saving). Quasi Swiss watchmaking in a robust environment.

Task:

Ships must be able to navigate very precisely. In order to maintain an accurate course, many influencing factors have to be taken into account. The most important of these is probably the rudder control. And for the rudder to be steered precisely, the rudder position must be measured exactly. What counts here is not only the high longevity of the position detection in harsh environments (e.g. due to dirt, oil films, emulsions, high temperatures, the salt content of the air, etc.) but also a highly stable and very reliable signal from the sensor system to the control system.

Solution:

Here, the KINAX® WT202 with an angular range of 0…350° and special drive shaft dimensions was used. The position sensor can be parameterized using free software. The position sensor converts the angular position into a direct current (4…20mA) proportional to the measured angular value and transmits this to the rudder control. From this signal, the downstream receiver determines the actual rudder position. A correction of the rudder is then implemented via solenoid valves, which hydraulically set the corresponding mechanics of the rudder in motion.

Benefit:

Due to the very compact design and the almost frictionless rotation axis, changes in position are detected quickly and very precisely, facilitating ship navigation. The absolute robustness and simplicity of the sensor were also convincing. During the very long service life of the encoder, maintenance work is virtually obsolete.

For this purpose, the railcar driver operates the so-called speed step switch in an essential function. This switch is responsible on the one hand for setting the speed and braking and on the other hand for the direction of travel. Due to the high requirements for the exact position detection of the speed step switch (e.g. precision, accuracy, safety, reliability, perfect signal level, compact design, etc.), robustness with technical precision is indispensable.

Solution:

With a provable proof of concept, the KINAX®3W2 was selected. A contactless & wear-free capacitive scanning system is used. The rotation angle measuring range is generally 0…5 to 0…270° and offers a measuring output of 0…1 to 0/4…20 mA. The zero point and span are adjustable and the characteristic curve of the output variable / linear or as V-characteristic can be executed. The torque is <0.001Ncm.

Benefit:

Due to the very compact design and the almost frictionless rotary axis, position changes are detected quickly and very precisely. In addition, the simple but nevertheless very stable type of signal transmission allows a fast and sustainable integration. During the very long service life of the encoder, maintenance work is virtually obsolete. This is comparable to Swiss watchmaking quality.

Bejing Capiatl Airport Lighting with PQ5000

PQ lighting monitoring at Beijing Capital Airport

Task:

In the People’s Republic of China, the state awards the so-called Green Label to demand efficient energy consumption. With a view to saving energy on a massive scale and thus conserving valuable resources, Beijing Airport has converted its lighting from energy-guzzling lighting systems (e.g. gas pressure lamps) to LED technology. Since the changeover, however, the technical management has noticed that the service calls of the technicians have increased many times over. And what’s more, the service calls have changed in that more malfunctions have occurred in the context of electronic controls and IT systems. Often, faults could be resolved by a simple reset. However, it was not possible to determine what had caused the malfunctions. And the frustration of all involved was great.

Solution:

After several discussions with the technical airport management and the incidents, it was clear that the LED systems had changed something fundamental. However, where, when and why disturbances were occurring could not be determined until now. For this reason, it was decided to carry out continuous power quality measurements with the LINAX®PQ5000 at many critical distribution points within the airport grid. The basic prerequisite for the pilot and subsequent roll-out was compliance with all technical specifications as well as simple system integration.

Benefit:

Thanks to the continuous measurement and the integrated time synchronization, it was possible to determine where possible causes came from in the event of a malfunction. In fact, the new and modern LED lighting was mainly responsible. Quick intervention at the cause, e.g. by using filters, higher quality systems, etc., reduced the number of faults many times over. However, the measurement did not only help reactively but was also used as a preventive measure to avoid disturbances before they occur. In addition, due to the accuracy of the measurement, the load flows could be controlled and optimized. This is also part of the Green Label. For the roll-out and ongoing implementation, the user-friendly HMI was very beneficial for the customer. And last but not least, Beijing Airport relied on Swiss precision certified by METAS as well as comprehensive cyber security at the device level – a true brand label.
