Power generation
Position sensors for detecting the gate inclination at the dam flaps of the Khanki Dam in Punjab, Pakistan. It is extremely important for the application to use resistant materials as well as to obtain stable position signals. The application is a hydraulic structure with strong vibrations, a temperature range of +10°C to +45°C and a humidity of 70% to 90%. It is also important to the engineers during commissioning that the sensors can be integrated into the control room in a very simple and straightforward manner. Long-term stability as well as a long service life of the sensors is a prerequisite.
KINAX®-N702-INOX inclination transducer with oil-damped pendulum system. This type of inclination transducer is extremely robust and very well suited for such type of environmental conditions as well as application.
Due to the high-end engineering on the part of Descon, technical parameters lead to the advantages. These are, among others, the range measurement in an angle 0….359°, the stable output signal 4 to 20 mA, the high accuracy of 0.2°, the material composition of the housing, the withstanding of vibrations due to the oil damping (vibration resistance: <40m/s2 / 10. …500 Hz according to IEC 60068-2-6), a shock resistance <300 m/s2 / 18 ms according to IEC 60068-2-27, a temperature range -30…+70°C, humidity <100% and a temperature drift 0.1°/10K.

In the People’s Republic of China, the state awards the so-called Green Label to demand efficient energy consumption. With a view to saving energy on a massive scale and thus conserving valuable resources, Beijing Airport has converted its lighting from energy-guzzling lighting systems (e.g. gas pressure lamps) to LED technology. Since the changeover, however, the technical management has noticed that the service calls of the technicians have increased many times over. And what’s more, the service calls have changed in that more malfunctions have occurred in the context of electronic controls and IT systems. Often, malfunctions could be resolved by a simple reset. However, it was not possible to determine what had caused the malfunctions. And the frustration of all involved was great.
After several discussions with the technical airport management and the incidents, it was clear that the LED systems had changed something fundamental. However, where, when and why disturbances were occurring could not be determined until now. For this reason, it was decided to carry out continuous voltage quality measurements with the LINAX® PQ5000 at many critical distribution points within the airport grid. The basic prerequisite for the pilot and subsequent roll-out was compliance with all technical specifications as well as simple system integration.
Thanks to the continuous measurement and the integrated time synchronization, it was possible to determine where possible causes came from in the event of a malfunction. In fact, the new and modern LED lighting was mainly responsible. Quick intervention at the cause, e.g. by using filters, higher quality systems, etc., reduced the number of faults many times over. However, the measurement did not only help reactively, but was also used as a preventive measure to avoid disturbances before they occur. In addition, due to the accuracy of the measurement, the load flows could be controlled and optimized. This is also part of the Green Label. For the roll-out and ongoing implementation, the user-friendly HMI was very beneficial for the customer. Last but not least, Beijing Airport relied on Swiss precision certified by METAS as well as the comprehensive cyber security at the device level – a true brand label.

In general, the offshore environment is very harsh. And yet, or precisely because of this, robust as well as sustainably accurate measuring instruments are of great importance. In this context, the customer ADNOC (Abu Dhabi National Oil Company) is looking for a measurement solution to support them in their load shedding issue. For this purpose, a measuring transducer was sought that can provide very accurate active power data even under the harshest conditions. And this over a long product availability (service life).
The DM5S is a multifunctional transmitter that has been used 10,000 times in the field. The transmitter has a compact design and is mounted on a top-hat rail in the control cabinet. The connection to the control room is made via a resistant Modbus RTU communication.
The solution was plausible for the customer, since a product with a proven “proof of concept” could be used even for the toughest operating conditions. In addition, the compact design meant that the non-existent installation space could be relieved. Another advantage was that the configuration could be carried out virtually at the desk, even without supply voltage. This again relieved the on-site technicians and made commissioning more efficient.

The Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Thermal Power Plant – Thermal Energy Storage System is being developed by ACWA Power International and Shanghai Electric Group. The project is owned by ACWA Power International (50%) and Shanghai Electric Group (50%), a subsidiary of Shanghai Electric Group.
The main applications of the project are on-site renewable power shifting, renewable power capacity firming, and renewable power time shifting. For this purpose, the measurement task in the medium voltage switchgear requires long-term stability even under high temperatures as well as low humidity. In addition, a secure connection to the control room is required.
The SINEAX® AM2000 product is perfectly suited for this application. In the comparative tests, the SINEAX® AM2000 impressed with its stability and quality even under the required extreme conditions. The secure connection could be guaranteed by the transmission using IEC61850.
The price-performance ratio was a decisive argument. Not only the compliance with the required long-term stability was convincing, but also the intuitive and clear TFT display. This was important to the engineers from Shanghai Electric as well as the operator, especially during the commissioning of this very complex plant. In addition, the simple integration into the Siemens medium-voltage system scored points.

Holders of an electrical installation permit (electricians, inspectors, etc.)
Since 01.01.2018, the partial revision of the NIV (Low Voltage Installation Ordinance) adopted by the Swiss Federal Council has been in force for holders of the general installation permit. This also prescribes regular further training for holders of a restricted license. The obligation to undergo further training is one day per year.
In order to give the holders of an installation permit the opportunity to continue their education on a smaller scale, the Academy was founded in 2019. The Academy offers seminar participants state-of-the-art ambience and seminar technologies to enable effective as well as efficient learning. The individual lessons are held by professional speakers with proven expertise to offer real, relevant as well as interesting topics. Up to 50 participants can join the table on site. The seminars are also held in hybrid form. This means that participants can also take part via a webinar. In addition, participants can have their measuring instruments calibrated on site and take them home again on the same day. Participation is confirmed with a certificate.
The Academy with its location in Wohlen in Aargau offers good transport connections from all directions. In addition, the train station is only a few minutes’ walk from the venue. Those who want to avoid the journey to and from the event can also participate in the seminar online at any time. External advisers provide thereby for an interesting and instructive program. The hospitality of the participants starts in the well-equipped cafeteria with a welcome coffee and a traditional croissant. During the seminar there is plenty of water available for everyone. For the lunch break we currently offer a Swiss bratwurst from the outdoor grill and a salad buffet. Throughout the day, we are also concerned that the participants as well as the speakers can exchange ideas and network. Last but not least, the on-site calibration service is also a benefit. The instruments will be calibrated on the day of delivery and therefore there will be no additional freight costs or even a breakdown over several days or weeks.

Wastewater treatment and the removal of pollutants is a special task for authorities, regions, cities and their operators. Especially in desert states, such as Sharjah, where the high outside temperatures and sun exposure are added as a special challenge to the actual cleaning and disposal issue. Wastewater treatment also requires a lot of energy and, due to the many technological electronic components, is increasingly vulnerable to poor or irregular voltage quality. For this reason, Sharjah Municipality has decided to demand transparency on the topic of power quality as well as load flow optimization.
In the first step, a LINAX® PQ3000 was installed in each of the low-voltage (LV) switchgears on the secondary side of the 2,500kV transformers. The Power Quality Instrument (PQI) complies with IEC61000.4.30 Ed. 3 to Class A and is also metrologically certified. This means that the class A devices can withstand any technical as well as legal evaluation. The load curves are monitored via the web browser as well as via Modbus TCP/IP. The conformity of the voltage quality according to EN50160 is evaluated cyclically via a scheduler without additional software and stored in a PDF report. In addition, the voltage events are logged sustainably and can be analyzed directly via the devices.
The self-sufficient system of the power quality instruments with all the functionalities fully convinced the customer in terms of price and technology. Furthermore, the designated functionalities of a cyber security in the measuring device itself were very welcome. Not least because wastewater treatment is part of the critical infrastructure and must be protected against unauthorized access to a particular extent. In a further step, the measuring points are connected to a visualization and data management software, which fully covers the energy management as well as the secure data communication to the higher-level control system.

For a new building, the electrical infrastructure with its core elements must be made visible. Especially in the time of COVID, it became more and more clear how fundamental clinics and their electrical facilities are. Thus, clinics belong to the critical infrastructures. The core task of the monitoring is the collection of all relevant electrical data, including energy. Important for this project with many hundreds of measuring points is the price/measurement location. In addition, flexibility is required, since Modbus RTU as well as Modbus TCP/IP is to be used. The customer attaches great importance to a punctual delivery.
Once again, the SIRAX® BM1250 from the ECOline series is in demand. All technical parameters, incl. the accuracies, are adhered to. In addition, the type of connectivity can still be decided or adapted on site by means of so-called backpags. The delivery date is closely agreed with the customer.
The price-performance ratio is right. In addition, there is the flexibility of connectivity, since at the time of procurement it was not yet possible to define exactly where Modbus RTU and TCP/IP would be used. Especially in the context of the global procurement situation through COVID, this was crucial in order not to cause any delivery delays.

Monitoring the distribution valve of the preheater. The raw materials, intermediate products and final products used in cement production are solid and mostly granular or powdery materials. The process consists of crushing and preheating, homogenization of the raw materials, calcination of the cement, grinding and packaging of the cement. This often involves a harsh environment. And yet, precision is what counts.
The KINAX® 3W2 rotary encoder is located in the distributor valve of the preheater. The distributor valve serves to transport the raw meal evenly to the zones of the preheater. It is important that quantity and temperature remain in balance.
The very robust yet precise technology of the KINAX® position senors enables the simplest integration. The simple signal processing of the sensors also relieves the central control system and significantly optimizes the speed of raw meal decomposition. Energie Wasser Bern (ewb) has been monitoring its low-voltage network (NE 7) with mobile measuring systems for decades. The low-voltage outputs are measured and evaluated in all 600 or so transformer stations every three years over a period of one week. These measurements include load and power quality analyses. These data are managed centrally on a PQ (PowerQuality) server. It must also be possible to use this existing server with the new measuring devices. With this tender, the existing measuring devices (Multiquant) are to be replaced.
LINAX®PQ5000-MultiPQ as a fully-fledged and multifunctional multi-channel measuring device for load and power quality analysis with connection to the PQIS®.
The expectations on the part of the industrialised measuring equipment have been met. These include scalability and the connection to the existing PQIS® evaluation software. Important here is the provision of measurement data according to a catalogue of criteria as well as the management of changing object data. The very small dimensions and the low weight compared to the old measuring equipment are to be emphasised. The modern and self-explanatory HMI (Human Machine Interface) and the simple and robust scalability of the Current Link sensors also attract attention. This pleases both the technician who will transport the devices to and from the measurement object and connect them, as well as the technical staff who will later carry out the evaluation.

In the network of 4 energy suppliers, approximately 700 distribution stations are operated at the medium-voltage level. Due to local conditions in the infrastructure, transformer stations are often not digitally networked with each other. For this reason, stored measurement data must be automatically retrievable by a technician on site. This is then carried out at regular intervals for stand-alone solutions. In order for the data to be stored in reports later and also analysed, an external software solution must be used. The HMI of the measuring instruments as well as the external software solution in the local language is indispensable. In addition, the registration of the measuring instruments in the state metrological register of Ukraine is essential.

Based on the existing Swiss Metrological Certification of the analysers according to METAS, the LINAX®PQ3000 could easily be included in the State Metrological Register of Ukraine. For the end customers, all specific requirements of the data formats, the readout options as well as the reporting and analysis criteria were fulfilled. In addition, the users could easily connect the power quality analysers to the existing control system, provided that a communication line existed. But last but not least, the technical on-site support was also crucial in order to provide optimal support during consulting as well as later integration.
