Emirates Steel, Abu Dhabi
Steel industry
Steel beams and steel wire coils are produced in the customer’s steel processing plant. Individual areas are supplied with sometimes very high currents in the low-voltage levels. The plants have been in operation for many years and costly faults are increasingly occurring in the electrical filter systems (capacitor banks). The steelworks must also strive to achieve a positive CO2 footprint. The company is looking for ways to tackle these issues step by step.
The LINAX® PQ5000CL is used to check the individual outgoing circuits for efficiency and possible interference. On the one hand, this should measure the outgoing feeders accurately, but on the other hand it should also record the harmonics on the entire system. All data is then stored and evaluated in a SCADA interface developed by the customer.
The unique measuring system is supplied as a complete unit in a housing. In addition, the Current Link modules are very easy to connect for high output measurement and do not require any complex installation. This saves the customer elementary wiring work. Thanks to the ability to measure high currents of up to 20kA per outgoing circuit, the LINAX® PQ5000CL measuring system covers all of the customer’s requirements, as rated currents of up to 4,500kA can be covered. Another advantage is that the LINAX® PQ5000CL measuring system can also measure harmonics directly.

Mining (open pit, underground, mining)
Conveyor belts are used to transport the mined raw material to the production and transport sites. Conveyor belts can tear. The tear causes the conveyor belt to either run apart or into each other. The result is the loss of valuable raw materials. To avoid this, the course of the conveyor belts must be constantly monitored.
The detection of the strip running position is optimally realized with robust encoders. Here, the KINAX® WT707 has proven to be optimal.
Due to the extreme outdoor conditions such as heat, dust, storms, etc., a robust design is essential. This guarantees reliable and trouble-free operation of the plant to ensure high productivity of the extracted raw materials. It is also important that the operator has to perform as little maintenance as possible, which the KINAX® WT707 series encoders ensure in any case. And despite the durability of the KINAX® WT707, it is important for the operator to be able to obtain spare parts even after several years. This is also guaranteed.
Dan Plate Steelwork, Denmark
Steel
In the customer’s steel mill, the issues of energy efficiency as well as voltage and power quality have long since arrived. It is also important to the customer to check the quality and actual power of the incoming voltage on the network side according to class A. In order to obtain an initial overview of the main distribution, stationary network monitoring is provided.
SmartCollect® SC2 was selected as the SCADA interface for visualization. Here, the customer’s infrastructure was exactly reproduced in a single-line diagram. In this way, the customer has a digital twin, so to speak, which represents the states of the infrastructure. So that the network quality can also be monitored, LINAX® PQ1000 class S and LINAX® PQ3000 class A devices are in use. These provide information on whether intervention is required to optimize the power quality and thus reduce losses. The system is operated throughout via the SmartCollect® SC2.
The simplicity, functionality as well as optimal graphical visualization enabled the customer to get a first state of the electrical infrastructure in the selected area. With the dynamic information available at the push of a button as well as automated, the customer now works on his continuous optimizations and thus makes a valuable contribution to saving valuable energy. Due to the self-explanatory simplicity of the system ,the customer does not need any special knowledge to operate the system.
LyondellBasell Industries, Italy
Chemistry & Petrochemistry
The main task is to make the electrical infrastructure of the entire site visible. The customer attaches great importance to the fact that, in addition to the essential load and efficiency information, the topic of power quality also plays a separate role. The complexity of the entire operation is a challenge.
In order to cover the high requirements of the customer, the measurements are performed by the LINAX® PQ3000. The measurement device was chosen for its high performance, connectivity but also for its ease of use. The decisive factor was also the reporting of the conformities as well as the events in the subject of power quality. The entire area is monitored and its status reported by the SmartCollect® SC2. And to correctly represent the complexity of the area, the AutoCAD data import function was chosen.
By planning and jointly building the monitoring system in advance, it was possible to implement the customer’s requirements in the best possible way. In addition, it is a significant advantage that the single line information of the SmartCollect® SC2 is in complete agreement with that of the AutoCAD systems. This means that adjustments in the network can also be displayed in the monitoring software in the simplest way at any time.
Alupak, Switzerland
Packing
The company Alupak is the thermoforming specialist for very high-quality aluminum packaging. The company specializes in high-quality coffee capsules. At the Belp site, the focus is on energy-efficient production to the highest standards. This means that monitoring is to be carried out down to individual production lines. This should help to optimize the energy consumption of the products and to reduce the manufacturing costs. In this way, the company is making a decisive contribution to the reduction of CO2 and to Switzerland’s overall Energy Strategy 2050.
In order to optimally record the performance data of the production lines, devices of the EnergySense series, SINEAX® AM1000 as well as associated current transformers of the SIRAX® CT series were used.
The customer appreciates the cost-benefit ratio in the overall package. The close cooperation with the system integrator Küffer Elektrotechnik is also decisive. Not only the electrical measuring devices alone are relevant, but also the complete energy chain up to the pneumatic air treatment components as well as the cooling measurement, which should help to achieve a better energy footprint. It was also essential that all the measuring equipment was configured in advance so that the recommissioning of the systems could be carried out without any complications. Küffer was able to deliver, install and support all this in one package.
Keramik Laufen AG
Sanitary ware & bathroom furniture
The site includes various factory and office buildings, including the subsidiary Similor. Production takes place in a 24/7 operation. In order to prepare the property for the future in terms of energy, transparency is to be created in the electrical infrastructure. This includes the central recording of the energy flows of the individual objects as well as the recording of the network quality according to class A.
SmartCollect®SC² was used for central visualization. The individual load flows are made visible via SINEAX AM1000. The power quality is measured in each case on the secondary side of the transformers with the devices of the LINAX PQ3000 series.
The customer appreciates the cost-benefit ratio of the complete system solution. The scalability of the system is important to him, as the individual measuring points are constantly being expanded. Also, the energy monitoring is extended by means of simple plug-ins of the SmartCollect®SC² to optimize the CO2 footprint. In addition, personal and professional support at all times is crucial.
General
All
Especially in the age of the energy transition and the challenges associated with it, measurements and the associated connectivity seem to be becoming increasingly important. However, it is often not clear which measurement instruments are suitable for which measurement location.
We present here a general solution matrix to help decide “where and which” measurement tool to use.

Jiangshan Southern Cement Co., Ltd. China
Cement production
Monitoring the distribution valve of the preheater. The raw materials, intermediate products and final products used in cement production are solid and mostly granular or powdery materials. The process consists of crushing and preheating, homogenization of the raw materials, calcination of the cement, grinding and packaging of the cement. This often involves a harsh environment. And yet, precision is what counts.
The KINAX®3W2 rotary encoder is located in the distributor valve of the preheater. The distributor valve serves to transport the raw meal evenly to the zones of the preheater. It is important that quantity and temperature remain in balance.
The very robust yet precise technology of the KINAX® position senors enables the simplest integration. The simple signal processing of the sensors also relieves the central control system and significantly optimizes the speed of raw meal decomposition. The reliability as well as the extreme durability of the rotary encoder of the KINAX® series is appreciated here.
