Securely process (measurement) data treasures

Digitization of electricity or...the Internet of Energy (IoE)

"SmartGrid Box" in combination with the "BentoNet"

The thematic blocks:

  • The question of “Why SmartGrid” and the “Challenges”
  • Safely leveraging and utilizing the potential treasure trove of data: The basic architecture
  • Consideration of different use cases of the SmartGridBox:
    • SmartGridBox Use Case 1: Wired outgoing metering

    • SmartGridBox Use Case 2: Outgoing metering wireless
    • SmartGridBox Use Case 3: Operating PV systems in line with the grid

Die Frage nach dem "Warum SmartGrid"

The "new" electrical flow direction in the grid

Growing challenges in the grid and conclusions

  • Push of the energy transition (political, social, ecological, economic)
  • Consumers are increasingly becoming prosumers (load and voltage requirements in the grid)
  • Growing stakeholder groups (regulatory, environment, politics, society, customers, DSOs, etc.)
  • New disorder on the one-way street = bidirectional grids with many nodes
  • Shortage of skilled workers automatically leads to prioritized “inactivity”
  • Greatly increasing complexity (electrical, IT, regulatory, commercial, working time models, etc.)
  • The grid quality is changing – so-called power quality – (faults, outages, defects, etc.)
  • Cyber attacks on critical infrastructure are increasing rapidly
Stress im System

Possible conclusion(s)

  • Technology support is needed in the grid, not a replacement
  • Beneficial digitalization of existing systems is necessary
  • Expansion and modernization of electrical infrastructures
  • Creating truly “meaningful” transparency in the grids
  • Targeted handling of data for systemic processing & use
  • Apply cyber security holistically down to field level (measurement level)
  • It is essential to consider the transformation of technology & people

SmartGridBox Use Case 1: Wired outgoing metering

use case 1
ringbus

Features:

      • Zero-blind technology for the fastest acquisition of status data (54kHz sampling)
      • Real-time data in top-of-second mode or >1s adjustable (IEC61850 data push)
      • Not only load, but also power and power quality data available
      • Up to 20kA per outgoing circuit possible (e.g. also for measuring the main distribution board with the same module)
      • All status data is fully synchronized with each other (overall grid dynamics)
      • Early problem localization through grid transparency
      • Extremely simple installation (pilot AND roll-out)

Conclusion:

      • Highest measurement performance for a dynamic and fully computable grid with real-time data

SmartGridbox Use Case 2: Wireless outgoing metering

use case 2
wireless

Features:

      • Not only load, but also power and power quality data available
      • Up to 1kA per (phase) outgoing circuit possible
      • Average values up to 1/min and instantaneous values 1/s
      • All status data is fully synchronized with each other
      • Simple installation thanks to wireless sensors
        (pilot AND roll-out)
      • Early problem localization through grid transparency
      • Wireless technology can be used for various Camille Bauer standard measuring devices (PQI or PMD)
      • Measure up to 33(25) outgoing circuits simultaneously

Conclusion:

      • High performance for a dynamic and computable grid

SmartGridbox Use Case 3: Operating PV systems to serve the grid

usecase 3
usecase 3 pv anlage

Features:

  • Minimal installation effort
  • Self-sufficient and self-controlling system (decentralized)
  • Use of standard components
  • Control unit and measuring device in one (2-in-1)
  • No programming required
  • Followers can also be equipped with class A power quality measurements
  • Additional measurement of outgoing feeders with use case 2 (wireless) possible (combination of use cases 2 and 3)

Conclusion:

  • This system enables distribution grid operators to keep the grids in balance directly through measured status data.
  • This also makes it possible to control feed-ins without counter-load, especially during sunny periods

Advantages summarized

Good reasons for the SmartGridBox:

  • The (measuring) system is built according to your needs (a SmartGridBox with functional options)
  • Straightforward implementation (plug and play concept)
  • Fast in the pilot as well as in the roll-out
  • You get to know your grid through implementation
  • You are spared complexity
  • Future-proof thanks to an open and state-of-the-art (system) platform architecture (non-proprietary)
  • Performance and, where applicable, grid quality make the grid transparent for you
  • Cyber protection stand-alone and cyber security in combination with BentoNet (ISO27001)
  • A roll-out is based on your experience and can therefore be optimized
  • You only use and pay for what helps you at the time
  • New business and remuneration models can be based on this
