PV Control Generic Schematic Principle

Automated, load-based control of photovoltaic systems

Company:

Various

Sector:

Power generation and distribution

Task:

Solar inverters are to be controlled directly and automatically on the basis of electrical status values. A measuring box for monitoring is to be installed in each low-voltage distribution box to record the measured values. The measurement data must be transmitted via an LTE router.

Solution:

A decentralized system with so-called smart grid boxes is being set up. The status of the distribution boxes (NS) is recorded individually and dynamically. The recorded values are sent via a router to a decentralized controller with an integrated measuring instrument. There, the respective states are compared with the target values. Depending on the result, the inverters are controlled so that PV systems only feed into the grid when they are actually serving the grid.

Benefit:

The grids are balanced on condition. Power without loads, especially during sunny periods, can thus be controlled. Thanks to the decentralized solution with SINEAX® DM5000 measurement technology and the combined CENTRAX® CU5000 control unit, the system is highly scalable and flexible. Also ideal for compliance with §14a of the German Energy Industry Act (EnWG).

Position feedback throttle valve position hydropower plant

Position feedback damper position Hydroelectric power station

Company:

Grimsel Hydro, Switzerland

Sector:

Energy Generation (Hydropower)

Task:

The water intake control in the waterworks turbine is regulated by a large throttle slide valve. The exact setting position of the slide valve must be continuously and reliably monitored so that the power plant can be operated at the optimum operating point. A failure or impairment immediately poses the risk of damage to people, machinery and the environment.

Solution:

The position of the throttle slide is effectively measured via a rotary encoder of the KINAX® WT707 series or also KINAX® WT720. The measured electrical signal of 4-20mA is fed back to a controller.

Benefit:

Due to the simplicity as well as the very robust design, the KINAX® WT707 as well as the KINAX® WT720 are ideally suited for such tasks. Not only the harsh environment does not bother the sensors. Because the maintenance-free design easily withstands it. The very long service life with sustained precision and availability also makes a significant contribution to a safe and reliable power supply from the power plant.

Monitoring fuel valve of a diesel generator

Monitoring of the fuel valve of a diesel generator for nuclear power plants

Company:

no data

Sector:

Energy Generation (Nuclear)

Task:

In the event of a power failure, diesel generators are often used as a quasi-uninterruptible power supply (UPS). These generators guarantee very high reliability and bridge the failure until the supply is restored. In this particular case, we are even talking about a very critical infrastructure – namely that of a nuclear power plant. Here, reliability must be 100% guaranteed in order to be able to comply with the high safety requirements.

Solution:

In order to monitor the position of the fuel valve on the generator safely and permanently, a KINAX® WT707 was mounted directly on the fuel valve. During the opening and closing process, the KINAX® WT707 series encoder rotates directly and precisely and sends its analog voltage signal to the control system.

Benefit:

Due to the direct mounting to the valve, it is guaranteed that the position of the valve is not possibly transmitted incorrectly via a transmission medium (e.g. due to breakage of the shaft bushing on the actuator cylinder, etc.). In addition, extremely high reliability and accuracy are expected, which the KINAX® WT707 provides due to its high load capacity even under harsh conditions. Furthermore, the maintenance-free design is convincing, which provides the KINAX® WT707 with a long service life and lasting precision.

Smart Grid Pilot Package

Smart Grid Pilot Package by Camille Bauer

Company:

Swistec AG, Switzerland

Sector:

Energy supply

Task:

Swistec is a well-known supplier of ripple control systems. Due to the increasing complexities in the low voltage network, Swistec is increasingly requested by their customers to implement control functions (switching on and off of power) now also on the low voltage level.

Solution:

In order to be able to switch to control operation, it is necessary to record the network status dynamically and make it transparent. From this acquisition, the ripple control system can then recognize which switching operations are to be triggered. To create transparency, Camille Bauer provides a Smart Grid Pilot package to quickly obtain data and knowledge. The package consists of the components “LINAX® PQ5000CL” as well as the system software “SmartCollect® SC2”. To make the pilot package even more straightforward to put into operation, it is recommended to route the data stream via a VPN gateway or via the BentoNet® system (ISO270001), as this does not place a burden on the customer’s ICT infrastructure.

Benefit:

The package enables the operator to obtain fundamental network information at the individual feeders of the low-voltage level very quickly. During the pilot phase, the accompanied learning phase will also enable the operator to carefully plan a roll-out over time. This is because it is likely that without a pilot phase, it will be difficult to identify where grid automation is absolutely necessary. It should also be mentioned that the systems are open to the future and also make it possible to digitize the networks. The mobile measuring system “LINAX® PQ5000-MultiPQ” can also contribute to the initial detection of the network condition.

Acquisition of measurement data such as active and reactive power. It is very important to both the manufacturers and the operators of the plants that reliable measurement data is supplied via robust signal paths. And this at any time of the year.

Solution:

Two SINEAX® DM5S are required per wind turbine to record data such as active and reactive power. This data is then transmitted to controllers and control systems via the RS485 interface. With these values, analyses but also evaluations of maintenance intervals are carried out.

Benefit:

Absolutely proven measurement technology ensures the reliability of the wind turbine by recording basic parameters. Thus, the turbine can be operated at the optimum operating point, unplanned outages can be avoided and maintenance can be properly planned. This increases the efficiency and saves time and money.
